Doug Stevens Comes Up Short in Legends Million
Drives ProGold Lubricants No. 77s Car to Second-Place Finish

CONCORD, N.C. (July 18, 2010) - Despite starting on the pole and being the class of the field all weekend, Doug Stevens came just short of capturing the win in the inaugural Legends Million race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, finishing second to Daniel Hemric.

Stevens, of Griffin, Ga., was the man to beat throughout the race on Saturday night, leading 89 of 100 laps in his ProGold Lubricants No. 77s car.

After leading the field across the start/finish line, Stevens showed early just how strong he was. Through the first fifty laps and five cautions Stevens was able to fend off challenges from Hemric, Dennis Lambert and Tyler Green.

During the intermission at the halfway mark, Stevens said he was happy with his car.

"The car was pretty good... I was kind of just riding," Stevens told Speed Channel. "I don't think I'm going to make any changes. I think I'm going to leave the same tires on. These tires feel really good... with all the cautions and everything it's given them time to cool off."

When racing resumed, Stevens quickly regained his lead over fellow competitors in his ProGold Lubricants car. Not far behind though was Hemric.

After battling hard for many laps, Hemric was finally able to overcome Stevens on lap 90, making him just the second leader of the race.

Despite efforts to battle back in the closing laps, Stevens wasn't able to push his ProGold Lubricants car back to the lead. He finished second behind Hemric, taking home a still sizeable $100,000 check.

Stevens said it was mechanical wear that cost him his chance at victory.

"I lost my right front brake there late in the race, and I couldn't get in as hard, and I washed up a little bit, and (Hemric) got by me," Stevens said in his post race interview. "The ProGold car was good all weekend... I didn't get that $250,000, but I'm really happy with second."

In addition to his second place finish, Stevens also led Thursday night qualifying, beating out 144 competitors by posting a 17.246 second time in his ProGold Lubricants car. He also won his heat race Friday night, thereby winning the pole for the Legends Million A-Feature on Saturday night.

Stevens adds this run to impressive credentials that include the track record for most wins at Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thursday Thunder, as well as multiple legends championships at Atlanta and Charlotte. Stevens also has experience racing in the ASA Series, as well as the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards.

Van Pounds, president and owner of ProGold Lubricants, said though they came short, he was happy with the night.

"I knew when we signed on with Doug Stevens we had a good chance to win this thing. He did a great job on track," Pounds said. "Though he didn't win the big paycheck, ProGold Lubricants couldn't be prouder to have been involved with such a great driver and great supporter of ProGold products."
