Frank Kimmel II Continues Success at Salem Speedway
Third Top-Five Finish for Kimmel in Three Races
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (June 23, 2010) - Frank Kimmel II is certainly no stranger to the .555 mile oval of Salem Speedway (IN) and always shows up as a top contender. Looking to take home another solid finish after landing two top-five finishes in back to back races at Wayne County Speedway (OH) and 250 Speedway (OH), Kimmel II wheeled his No. 68 Prodigy General Contractors, McKenzie Synthetic Inc. and Eddie Gilstrap Motors super stock to a gratifying second-place finish.
Kimmel II immediately proved he had what it took to secure his first win of the season when he went out and claimed the pole position after laying down a lap time of 19.044 during qualifying. After the inversion, Kimmel II started the 40-lap feature in third and was ready to use the inside starting position to his advantage.
The 12-car field saw plenty of green flag laps before the first caution flew on lap 21 and forced everyone to come back together for a tight, single-file restart. After the restart, Kimmel II remained in third place facing an ongoing battle with the second-place challenger until the second caution came out on lap 29 tightening the field for the final 11-lap shoot-out.
Kimmel II exercised his patience, sneaking under second place every lap but was not able to carry the momentum to complete the pass. With only five laps to go, Kimmel II knew he needed to make it happen and continued his relentless fight to the front. Still caught up in a heated battle for second-place with the No. 9, Kimmel made his final move in turns one and two, taking over the position from the outside groove. Kimmel spent the final flaps trying to chase down the leader, but was unable to catch him before the checkered-flag waved on lap 40, bringing home a second-place finish.
"Overall we had a really great day. The car was fast and it was awesome that we qualified on the pole," said Kimmel II. "I want to thank everyone on the No. 68 team for working hard and giving me a great car today."
After his strong performance this weekend, Kimmel looks forward to returning to Salem Speedway on July 4th to race in the Papa John's Firecracker 200.
