Jimmy Phelps Finds Success in Back-to-Back Super DIRTcar Series Races
Heinke-Baldwin Racing Gets First Win
Jimmy Phelps entered this week's doubleheader of Super DIRTcar Series races looking forward to the tough competition in the two mid-week races. He started strong, scoring a fourth-place finish at Grandview Speedway on Tuesday night. Phelps followed that with his first Super DIRTcar Series win of 2010, visiting victory lane in The Big Show 2 on Wednesday night at Orange County Fair Speedway.
At Grandview, Phelps posted the third-quickest time in qualifying, with a speed of 92.572 MPH in the No. 98H Heinke-Baldwin Racing (HBR) entry. He finished the heat race in third, which entered him in the qualifying redraw. Phelps started the Traffic Jam 100 feature event in eighth position, and finished the 100-lap race in fourth.
"I knew the guys that finished first and second at Grandview would be tough to beat," Phelps said. "We were too tight in the beginning of the night, but as the race went on we started to get pretty good. Our good spurt came too late, but I was still satisfied with the night."
On Wednesday, Phelps and the HBR team headed to Orange County Fair Speedway to race in The Big Show 2. With questionable weather looming, his main concern was getting the race in.
"Weather was a big concern going into the race," Phelps explained. "The forecast was so bad that we were looking at readjusting our travel plans, but then things started to look better and they decided to try and get the race in. We didn't see any rain until halfway through the race."
Phelps was quick right out of the gate, laying down the fastest time in qualifying with a speed of 106.333 MPH. He went on to win the heat race and redrew to start the feature race in ninth position. Phelps quickly moved forward, taking the lead on lap 38. He was able to avoid trouble in the caution-filled event and took the checkered flag on lap 67 of the rain-shortened event.
"We really had a perfect night at Orange County," Phelps stated. "Our car was so good all night, and I'm really happy with how things went. There were some real bad crashes in the feature, and the race being shortened by rain may have overshadowed just how good we were. We had a real fast car and I was able to do a lot of passing. We got the lead before the majority of the major turmoil, so all in all we were really happy."
Phelps' win marks his first Super DIRTcar Series win of 2010 as well as the first win for HBR, which was formed by co-owners Al Heinke and Tommy Baldwin over the off-season.
"It's so great to already be in the winner's circle in the Super DIRTcar Series this year," Phelps said. "I think this is the earliest we've won in recent history. This sets the tone that we are here to win and that is what we are going to do. The fact that this is the first win for HBR makes it extra special, and I am just really proud to be a part of it."
Following his strong run at Grandview Speedway and win at Orange County Fair Speedway, Phelps moved up to third in the Super DIRTcar Series point standings. The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native is currently 45 points behind points leader Billy Decker.
Phelps will spend the weekend racing for his family-owned Phelps Motorsports team, racing at Brewerton Speedway tonight and Fulton Speedway tomorrow. He will return to the Super DIRTcar Series next Wednesday, June 23, at Mohawk International Raceway in Akwesasne,N.Y.
