Jimmy Phelps Starts First, Finishes Second at Cayuga County Fair Speedway
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (June 1, 2010) - After a six-week schedule break, Heinke-Baldwin Racing (HBR) driver Jimmy Phelps returned to the Super DIRTcar Series at Cayuga County Fair Speedway Sunday night. Phelps had a solid night in the No. 98H Wave Energy Drink/Mohawk Northeast/Troyer entry, starting the feature race on the pole and finishing in second position in the Hall of Fame Classic 100.
Phelps and the HBR team were strong right out of the gate, setting the pace in qualifying with a time of 15.853 seconds. After the inversion, Phelps began his heat race in fourth position and finished the eight-lap race in third. Phelps was able to capitalize on his fast qualifying time and start the feature event in first after drawing the pole in the top-12 redraw following the four heat races.
Phelps' No. 98H car continued to set the pace, leading the first 22 laps of the feature event. The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native jumped out to a hefty lead, showing how strong his car was as he began battling lap traffic on lap 15.
Phelps was passed by eventual race-winner Matt Sheppard on lap 23. Phelps stayed close to Sheppard, until the No. 98H started to get loose towards the end of the caution-free final 54 laps of the event. He held a steady lead over the rest of the field and finished the feature event in second.
"Our car was good," Phelps said. "We were probably a little too good too early actually. We just got a little free at the end, and the leader got away from us. Still, I'm happy to finish second. It was a good race for us, and we climbed back into the points picture which is the most important thing."
Phelps spent Monday racing in the No. 98H as well, competing at Utica Rome Speedway. He finished the race in eighth, after overcoming two blown tires and tough track conditions.
Following his strong run at Cayuga County Fair Speedway, Phelps gained six positions and now sits fourth in the overall point standings. He will return to Super DIRTcar Series action at Grandview Speedway on Tuesday, June 15, and Orange County Fair Speedway on Wednesday, June 16.
