Jimmy Phelps Finishes 10th in Super DIRTcar Series Season Opener

Jimmy PhelpsMOORESVILLE, North Carolina (March 30, 2010) - Heinke-Baldwin Racing (HBR) driver Jimmy Phelps finished 10th in the Super DIRTcar Series season opener at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday night.

Phelps and the HBR team were especially looking forward to this race at Hagerstown Speedway because they were unable to race at the track the past two years, as rain had caused those events to be canceled. Although they had high hopes for the race, the weekend did not start as well as expected when the team was slightly off in qualifying. In total, 47 cars attempted to make the field, and Phelps qualified his No. 98H Wave Energy Drink car in the 18th position with a time of 21.299 seconds.

Phelps found that qualifying deep in the 31-car field made racing at Hagerstown Speedway difficult. At the beginning, he began working his way forward into the top-10. Midway through the race, the track conditions changed, and it became difficult to pass other cars. Phelps held steady, and at the end of the event, won by Billy Decker, the HBR team found themselves in 10th position.

Phelps was proud of his team, but felt like the 98H car was better than their race result. "I am a little disappointed in our finish. I know our car was better than a 10th place car," the Baldwinsville, N.Y. native explained. Nonetheless, he was proud of the team's effort. "In the end, finishing consistently in the top-10 is what wins championships. I would have liked to finish a little better, but I know that we'll regroup and move on."

The team will be testing this weekend and will race in the VP Racing Fuels Spring Fever 100 at Fulton Speedway on Saturday, April 10. Phelps is looking forward to getting back to the track he describes as his "Saturday-night track." The veteran has spent a lot of time at Fulton Speedway, and feels very comfortable racing there. "I am hoping for a real good showing at Fulton. I am looking forward to going there and continuing towards winning the 2010 Super DIRTcar Series championship."
